宜宾，位于攀西——六盘水资源富集区，是矿产资源宝地，探明矿产资源53种，其中煤炭保有储量53亿吨、居四川省首位，可开发水能资源716万千瓦，页岩气探明储量超过2万亿方，是国家规划的大西南页岩气勘探开发先导试验区的核心区。宜宾农业资源丰富，是四川重要的特色效益农产品基地，是中国早茶之乡、中国苦丁茶之乡、中国竹荪之乡、白酒原料之乡和全国最大的黄樟油产地。

宜宾，拥有铁路、公路、水运、港口、航空立体交通体系配套，是全省地级市中综合交通区位优势最为凸显、全省唯一可利用长江、岷江、金沙江综合水运优势的城市，长江航道1500吨级船舶常年昼夜通航、丰水期可达8000吨以上。随着成贵铁路、宜宾机场迁建、宜宾港等交通枢纽项目的加快建设，宜宾正成为四川出川的“南大门”和通江达海的“桥头堡”。
